Retro Interview: in the 1970s through the 1980s, Al Pascal programmed one of the most influential stations in Canada, CFRA-AM in Ottawa. The CFRA-AM market dominance is legend. The 1978 ratings show the CFRA-AM (7+) circulation to be near 540,000, roughly 2.84 times the audience of its nearest competition. CFRA-AM loses a few (7+) quarter-hours, many to sister station CFMO-FM. In AM Drive, Ken Grant was lifting the long-moribund station. The arrival of Pascal, in 1966, was the catalyst that sent CFRA-AM from bottom ratings to market dominance. IQ trumped dollar signs. Salespeople became order takers. Stodgy managers, too penurious to hinder newfound success, let listeners rejoice.
