How Dumb are You?
AJ Robinson

Puzzles in a box are not for politicos.

The other night I was watching one of those political-social roundtable discussions. It left me cold. I had to wonder, while listening to a democrat pundit: “Dude, just how dumb are you?”

ere’s the reason for my question.

The talking head was complaining Democrats stalled their own agenda in Congress. He couldn’t understand why Democrats weren’t making good on their promises of infrastructure, education, healthcare and so on. He warned, that if the Dems didn’t get something done, their constituents wouldn’t come out to vote for them in the 2022 midterms.

I rolled my eyes. I thought of that famous expression. “It’s déjà vu all over again,” Yogi Berra is reputed to have said.

I don’t get it. How are the Democrats so dumb as to fall into the same trap election after election? The Republicans have their repertoire down pat: take power, run up massive debt, get thrown out of power, block all efforts by the Dems to fix the mess they left, blame them for failing and then sweep into power in the next election. After that, repeat the process.

Yes, for the Democrats this is becoming a standard process of screwing up opportunities. I have to say, I grow tired of it, but they don’t seem able to break free of the process. So, allow me to offer some words of advice.

First off, dear Dems, understand that Biden, Pelosi and all the rest are trying to advance the Democratic agenda. Their failure is not due to weakness. It’s due to blocking by the republicans.

Why can't they?

When you ask why they can’t advance the agenda, stop and look at the tally sheet when it comes to Representatives and Senators. The Dems have a slim margin in the House, a mere 3. They have no margin for error in the Senate.

Why is that? Because no Republicans will vote in favour of the Democratic agenda, even though most Americans want such policies implemented. Don’t ask why the Dems are failing. Ask why the GOP is blocking.

Say to yourself, “If we just elect a few more Democrats, we can move the agenda forward.” Don’t do what you always do in every midterm. Don’t say: “Oh well, the Dems have failed, why should I bother voting?”

It’s such thinking that put the Republicans in control of Congress for most of the Obama terms. Remember what Obama and the Dems accomplished in those first two years? Does the term Obamacare ring a bell? How about the Fair Pay Act? Remember what happened once Mitch controlled the Senate? Two words: Merrick Garland.

Do you really want a repeat of that last one? If the GOP gets control of Congress in 2022, which, sadly, I fully expect, not only will nothing get done, but we’ll see endless investigations of the Biden Administration, his family and the 2020 election.

The January Sixth investigation? Oh, that’ll be stopped, all documents will be destroyed and the matter settled. They were tourists. It was BLM. It was Antifa. It was just a tour group. No infrastructure, no education, and most definitely no appointments to the Supreme Court.

Keep in mind, the reason Trump got to fill three vacancies on the Court was because of this exact scenario. Sadly, I also fully expect him to run in 2024 and win. After that he’ll pack the Court.

Women’s rights will be gone. Minorities, LGBTQ+ rights, all gone. Then they’ll be the matter of the 2028 presidential election. Now that Trump and his minions have worked out the kinks of a coup, what’s going to happen that year?

I am terrified.

Sadly, I have no clue, but the possibilities terrify me. So, people, please don’t be dumb. You want to advance the Biden and Democrat agenda? It’s simple: get out and vote.

Combining the gimlet-eye, of Philip Roth, with the precisive mind of Lionel Trilling, AJ Robinson writes about what goes bump in the mind, of 21st century adults. Raised in Boston, with summers on Martha's Vineyard, AJ now lives in Florida. Working, again, as an engineeer, after years out of the field due to 2009 recession and slow recovery, Robinson finds time to write. His liberal, note the small "l," sensibilities often lead to bouts of righteous indignation, well focused and true. His teen vampire adventure novel, "Vampire Vendetta," will publish in 2020. Robinson continues to write books, screenplays and teleplays and keeps hoping for that big break.
