Pillows & Mattresses
Matt Seinberg

One of the most used items in our home is pillows. Most of us don't think about pillows very much. They are on our living room furniture, as cushions on wooden chairs and, most importantly, on our beds.

Where we lay our heads to sleep is dirty.

Did you see the story in the news a few weeks ago stating that the pillows we use on our beds are the dirtiest things in our home? I didn't know that. I've been using pillows for years.

Why are they so dirty you ask? We drool on them at night, when we're asleep; yes, you do, so don't try to deny it, we lay our dirty hair on pillows. Pet lovers allow their dogs and cats to lay on them as well.

You say you have a pillowcase on it. It doesn't make a difference. Those pillowcases are not waterproof and anything and everything will go right through them and get onto your pillow.

There are only two ways to keep your pillow clean. The first is not to use it. The second is to put on a zippered, waterproof pillow protector. These covers are inexpensive covers; they will not only keep your pillow clean, but also prevent the growth of bacteria and dust mites.

Microscopic spiders inhabit our pillows and mattresses.

Dust mites are microscopic spiders that can inhabit your pillows and your mattress as well. They live off the pint of sweat we lose at night and the millions of skin cells we shed at night as well. Where do you think this icky stuff is going?

Right into your pillows and mattress, that's where!

Let's not even get started on bed bugs! If you watch the Travel Channel show "Hotel Impossible," they manage to find them in most every hotel they visit. Often, they have to bring in an exterminator. Do you know how much it would cost the average homeowner to take care of this problem, themselves? Try five to ten thousand dollars and that doesn't include the cost of buying a new mattress and pillows.

You have to look at your mattress as a big sponge. When it gets wet, the sponge expands. When moisture gets into your pillow and mattress, it will expand as well, and then dry up. Sponges soak up liquid, that’s its job; pillows and mattresses are not so lucky.

Always a good idea to use pillow and mattress protectors.

On all my beds at home, I have not only pillow protectors, but mattress protectors as well. They keep pretty much anything away from the mattress, and it will stay clean. For those people worried about the dreaded beg bugs, they need what's called a Total Encasement Bed Protector. Your mattress zips inside it and nothing can get inside.

The problem is that it takes two people to put the encased bed protector on. Who wants to do that when you change your sheets every week? The solution is to put a fitted bed protector on top of it, which comes off with your sheets and with the other one on you protect your bed, fully.

Anybody with kids and pets will certainly appreciate these products. Not only do they keep everything clean, they will uphold the manufactures warranty on the mattress as well. Did you know that if there’s a stain on mattress, in any way, no matter how big or small, the warranty is void?

Run out today and protect your pillows and mattresses! The life you clean up will be your own!
